Particle-Laden Flow: From Geophysical to Kolmogorov Scales

H. Clercx; W. Uijttewaal

This book contains a selection of the papers that were presented at the EUROMECH colloquium on particle-laden flow held at the University of Twente in 2006. The multiscale nature of this challenging field motivated the calling of the colloquium and reflects the central importance that the dispersion of particles in a flow has in various geophysical and environmental problems. The spreading of aerosols and soot in the air, the growth and dispersion of plankton blooms in seas and oceans, or the transport of sediment in rivers, estuaries and coastal regions are striking examples.

Quality and Reliability of Large-Eddy Simulations

Johan Meyers; Bernard Geurts; Pierre Sagaut
Computational resources have developed to the level that, for the first time, it is becoming possible to apply large-eddy simulation (LES) to turbulent flow problems of realistic complexity. Many examples can be found in technology and in a variety of natural flows.

Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation VI: Proceedings of the Sixth International ERCOFTAC Workshop on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation, Held at the Univers

Eric Lamballais; Rainer Friedrich; Bernard J. Geurts

The sixth ERCOFTAC Workshop on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation (DLES-6) was held at the University of Poitiers from September 12-14, 2005. Following the tradition of previous workshops in the DLES-series, this edition has reflected the state-of-the-art of numerical simulation of transitional and turbulent flows and provided an active forum for discussion of recent developments in simulation techniques and understanding of flow physics.

Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation VII: Proceedings of the Seventh International Ercoftac Workshop on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation, Held at the Univ

Vincenzo Armenio; Bernard Geurts; Jochen Frahlich

After Surrey in 1994, Grenoble in 1996, Cambridge in 1999, Enschede in 2001, Munich in 2003 and Poiters in 2005, the 7th Workshop, DLES7, will be held in Trieste, again under the auspices of ERCOFTAC. Following the spirit of the series, the goal of this latest workshop is to establish a state-of-the-art of DNS and LES techniques for the computation and modeling of transitional/turbulent flows covering a broad scope of topics such as aerodynamics, acoustics, combustion, multiphase flows, environment, geophysics and bio-medical applications. This gathering of specialists in the field should...

Diffusion and Transport of Pollutants in Atmospheric Mesoscale Flow Fields

A. Gyr; Franz-S Rys
In regions as densely populated as Western Europe, prediction of the ecological implications of pollutant transport are important in order to minimise damage in the case of accidents, and to evaluate the possible influence of existing or planned sources. In most cases, such predictions depend on high-speed computation. The present textbook presents a mathematically explicit introduction in eight chapters: 1: An introduction to the basics of fluid dynamics of the atmosphere and the local events and mesoscale processes. 2: The types of PDEs describing atmospheric flows for limited area...

Turbulence and Transition Modelling: Lecture Notes from the Ercoftac/Iutam Summerschool Held in Stockholm, 12-20 June, 1995

M. Hallback; D. S. Henningson; A. V. Johansson
The aim of this book is to give, within a single volume, an introduction to the fields of turbulence modelling and transition-to-turbulence prediction, and to provide the physical background for today's modelling approaches in these problem areas as well as giving a flavour of advanced use of prediction methods. Turbulence modelling approaches, ranging from single-point models based on the eddy-viscosity concept and the Reynolds stress transport equations (Chapters 3,4,5), to large-eddy simulation (LES) techniques (Ch. 7), are covered. The foundations of hydrodynamical stability and...

Three-Dimensional Velocity and Vorticity Measuring and Image Analysis Techniques: Lecture Notes from the Short Course Held in Zürich, Switzerland, 3-6

Th Dracos
The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zurich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems. One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed...

Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation III: Proceedings of the Isaac Newton Institute Symposium / Ercoftac Workshop Held in Cambridge, U.K., 12-14 May 1999

Peter R. Voke; Neil D. Sandham; Leonhard Kleiser
The practical importance of turbulence led the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering to launch an Initiative on Turbulence, the most important outcome of which was the definition and agreement of the 1999 Newton Institute Research Programme on Turbulence. The main aim of the- month programme, held at the institute in Cambridge, was to bring together the mathematics and engineering communities involved in the turbulence area to address the many problems and to map out future strategy. As a part of the Research Programme, a Symposium on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation was jointly organised with...
