In the wake of the positive reception of Brahms's first set of Liebeslieder-Walzer (the Op.52) after their 1869 premire, the conductor Ernst Rudorff persuaded the composer to orchestrate the accompaniment for 8 of the 18 selections (plus another piece subsequently included in the Op.65 set) for a concert given at Berlin's Hochschule on March 19, 1870. Stravinsky's ballet score for The Firebird launched his career as a composer after its Paris premiere in 1910. Although he extracted an orchestral suite the following year, the large orchestra required limited performances in the concert hall. Verdi's operas are most often represented in the concert hall by their overtures or 'sinfonias' with very good reason. A number of them are symphonic gems in their own right. The operas he composed for the Paris stage give us another view of his orchestral virtuosity with their sumptuous ballet scores. The ballet music here was composed for the Paris premiere of Il Trovatore, given on January 12, 1857 at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris conducted by Narcisse Girard.
