This volume includes four lecture courses by Bressan, Serre, Zumbrun and Williams and a Tutorial by Bressan on the Center Manifold Theorem. Bressan introduces the vanishing viscosity approach and clearly explains the building blocks of the theory. Serre focuses on existence and stability for discrete shock profiles. The lectures by Williams and Zumbrun deal with the stability of multidimensional fronts.

This book offers a detailed asymptotic analysis of some important classes of singularly perturbed boundary value problems which are mathematical models for phenomena in biology, chemistry, and engineering. The authors are particularly interested in nonlinear problems, which have gone little-examined so far in literature dedicated to singular perturbations. The treatment presented here combines successful results from functional analysis, singular perturbation theory, partial differential equations, and evolution equations.

Although, bifurcation theory of equations with autonomous and periodic time dependence is a major object of research in the study of dynamical systems since decades, the notion of a nonautonomous bifurcation is not yet established. In this book, two different approaches are developed which are based on special definitions of local attractivity and repulsivity. It is shown that these notions lead to nonautonomous Morse decompositions.

This fascinating book, penned by Luc Tartar of America s Carnegie Mellon University, starts from the premise that equations of state are not always effective in continuum mechanics. Tartar relies on H-measures, a tool created for homogenization, to explain some of the weaknesses in the theory. These include looking at the subject from the point of view of quantum mechanics. Here, there are no "particles," so the Boltzmann equation and the second principle, can t apply."

Of the three lecture courses making up the CIME summer school on Fluid Dynamics at Cetraro in 2005 reflected in this volume, the first, due to Sergio Albeverio describes deterministic and stochastic models of hydrodynamics.

In the second course, Franco Flandoli starts from 3D Navier-Stokes equations and ends with turbulence.

Finally, Yakov Sinai, in the 3rd course, describes some rigorous mathematical results for multidimensional Navier-Stokes systems and some recent results on the one-dimensional Burgers equation with random forcing.
