Die Serie Documenta Mnemonica wird in insgesamt 8 Banden die Quellen von Gedachtnislehre und Gedachtniskunst von der Antike bis zum Ende der Fruhen Neuzeit zuganglich machen. Band I stellt der interdisziplinaren Forschung erstmals die wichtigsten philosophischen, rhetorischen, theologischen und medizinischen Zeugnisse der Mnemonik zur Verfugung. Der jetzt erscheinende erste Teilband (von insgesamt drei) bietet 33 Texte von Autoren in historischer Folge aus der Entstehungs- und Fruhgeschichte der Mnemonik.

Am Beispiel der Gruppierung um Stefan George (1868-1933) entwirft die Arbeit ein Modell zur Analyse literarischer Vereinigungen in der Moderne, das sich auf sozialgeschichtliche Konzepte ebenso stutzt wie auf differenzierungstheoretische und kultursoziologische Entwurfe.

Zunachst wird dem Versuch Georges in den neunziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts ausfuhrlich dokumentiert, von uber 1700 gibt es genaue Hinweise auf in der Arbeitsstelle gesammeltes Material und diejenigen Veroffentlichungen, aus denen Ansatze fur eine weiterfuhrende Information gewonnen werden konnen.
