Die vorliegende Studie untersucht das Althochdeutsche erstmalig aus einer dezidiert textlinguistischen Perspektive.

Hierzu wird das Gros der althochdeutschen Textdenkmaler zuerst einer soziopragmatischen Einordnung unterzogen. Im Anschluss werden ausgewahlte Texte aus dem Kommunikationsbereich der pastoralen Seelsorge bzw. des Gottesdienstes textgrammatisch analysiert. Die Kombination von sozio- und systemlinguistischem Ansatz ermoglicht profunde Aussagen uber die an die Texte gestellten kommunikativen Aufgaben und deren erfolgreiche Umsetzung.
