Der Band befat sich mit der typologischen Beschreibung der Wortbildung am Beispiel denominaler Verben. Dabei wird hier Typologie als Erkenntnismethode allgemeiner und besonderer Eigenschaften konkreter Sprachen und menschlicher Sprache im Ganzen verstanden. Diese Methode wird zur Erforschung einzelner Subsysteme einer Sprache angewandt. Sie ermoglicht Schlufolgerungen, aus denen sich eine allgemeine Sprachtheorie formulieren lat. Diese Forschungsrichtung jedoch lat die Beschreibung vieler konkreter sprachlicher Erscheinungen vermissen, sie fehlt praktisch ganzlich in der Wortbildung.

Die Semantik raumlicher Ausdrucke gehort zu den zentralen Untersuchungsfeldern kognitiv orientierter Linguistik. Mit der Kombinatorik von Distanz- und Lokationsausdrucken existiert allerdings ein Bereich sprachlicher Phanomene, der bislang wenig und vor allem nicht adaquat behandelt worden ist.
