Based on a 500,000 word corpus of early sources collected from ex-slave narratives, ex-slave recordings, and interviews with hoodoo priests, this book reconstructs the English spoken by African Americans between 1830 and 1920. The 19 papers in this volume are a selection from a UCLA conference intended to take stock of the state of the field at the beginning of the new millenium and to stimulate research in English Historical Linguistics. The authors are predominantly U.S. scholars. The fields represented include morphosyntax and semantics, grammaticalization, discourse analysis, dialectology, lexicography, the diachronic study of code-switching, phonology and metrics.

Volume 3 is devoted exclusively to B. Pilsudski's Ainu-related materials, for their most part previously unpublished. In addition, it comprises Pilsudski's research reports on his expeditions, a superb collection of fifty prayers in Ainu as well as texts and melodies recovered from Pilsudski's famous wax-cylinder recordings of Ainu-folklore of 1902-1903.
