The series "Beitrage zur Altertumskunde" was founded in 1990. It mainly contains monographs and conference proceedings in German, but also includes texts, translations and commentaries on classical works which have had a long-lasting impact. The individual volumes of the series are useful aids to study, and represent a significant advance in our knowledge of the ancient world. Some eight volumes are published every year.

The volume contains an edition of c. 1,300 ostraca excavated in Abu Mina, Egypt, under the directorship of Peter Grossmann. Most of these ostraca comprise a partially surviving record of the pickings of grapes and of wine deliveries in the first half of the seventh century AD, before the Arab conquest in 642. Also, a small number contains some Christian texts, writings on pots or flasks, designs and writing exercises. The work traditionally attributed to the church father Nilus of Ancyra tells of a raid on the monastic settlement on Mount Sinai and the adventures of two monks living there, an old man and his son. The latter is abducted by Bedouins right in front of his father. They want to sacrifice the handsome youth to the morning star. After many hardships, the old father finds him alive and well, and both are ordained priests by the bishop of Eluse.

With this book, a still little-known text of some literary interest is made accessible to a wider public.
