In der Buchreihe des Instituts fur Ost- und Sudosteuropaforschung (IOS), den -Sudosteuropaische Arbeiten-, werden herausragende Monographien sowie Sammelbande, Nachschlagewerke und Editionen zur Geschichte und Gegenwart Sudosteuropas veroffentlicht. Die umfassende Rezeption im In- und Ausland weist die Reihe als auf ihrem Feld fuhrend aus. Die Reihe fuhrt damit seit Ende 2006 auch die inhaltlichen Bereiche der fruheren -Untersuchungen zur Gegenwartskunde Sudosteuropas- fort.

Die Studie widmet sich der bisher in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung nur wenig beachteten Personengruppe der deutsch-osterreichischen Beamten und ihrer Familien. Gestutzt auf amtliche Dokumente sowie Erinnerungen und Briefe aus osterreichischen, polnischen und ukrainischen Archiven und Bibliotheken versucht sie, ein Bild mehrerer Generationen ausgewahlter Familien in der Zeit zwischen 1772 und 1918 nachzuzeichnen.
