In der Spatantike, insbesondere im vierten Jahrhundert, vollzogen sich auf politischem, sozialem und religiosem Gebiet tiefgreifende Wandlungen. Die heidnischen Autoren des romischen Ostens (Kaiser Julian, Libanios, Eunap, Themistios) nahmen diese Prozesse als bedrohliche Krise wahr und reagierten mit literarischen Mitteln. Am Beispiel wichtiger Themen dieser Epoche, etwa der Konstruktion von Identitat, der idealen Herrschaft oder der gultigen Deutung der zeitgenossischen Realitat, arbeitet die Untersuchung erstmals den spezifischen Charakter dieser Literatur heraus.
