This book reports on the state of the art in multimedia information processing. The emphasis is on the convergence of information processing algorithms and associated technologies. The areas of interest include video/image coding, color vision, 3D reconstruction, field programmable devices, and many others.

This book includes selected papers of the VISAPP and GRAPP International Conferences 2006, held in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, February 25-28, 2006.

The 27 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 314 submissions. Neural computation arises from the capacity of nervous tissue to process information and accumulate knowledge in an intelligent manner. Conventional computational machines have encountered enormous difficulties in duplicating such functionalities. This has given rise to the development of artificial neural networks where computation is distributed over a great number of local processing elements with a high degree of connectivity and in which external programming is replaced with supervised and unsupervised learning.
