An investigation of American technical missions in foreign lands.

This book starts with a historical description of the economic development of the various regions within the United States from 1870 together with an analytical discussion of the broad factors affecting the location of economic activity. It then proceeds to a detailed statistical analysis of the state-by-state movement of employment between the 1939 Census of Manufactures and 1958. The last chapter is devoted to programs which may help bring a better balance of labor force and employment opportunity.

For the developing countries to take advantage of the accumulated and growing body of scientific and technological information, they must develop competence in choosing technology through an institutionalized technology policy. Third World experiences in developing and implementing technology policies are documented and analyzed in this volume. Issues such as the values shaping technology, selection of appropriate technology, technology transfer, technological self-reliance, planning, and development control are discussed in detail.
