Since 1987, Algeria has been in a conflict against Islamist guerilla groups which have killed over 200,000 people. During this period, Algeria also saw the establishment of over 70,000 voluntary associations. This book analyses the development of these associations in Algeria and the state's attempt to retain political legitimacy.
