As the National Numeracy Stragtegy (NNS) extends into secondary schools, this text for trainee and practising mathematics teachers provides practical guidance on developing effective strategies for the teaching of numeracy of Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 based on the DfEE requirements. The teaching and learning approaches suggested in the NNS are analysed and explained using case-study examples from secondary schools. Many of these ideas were developed by teacher inquiry in the Raising Standards in Numeracy project.
