Dialogue in science is essential for progress. But when dialogue becomes conflict, the situation is harmful not only to science, but also the wider society in which it exists. This is true whether the conflict is internal, in the case of Boltzmann, or external, as with Galileo or Oppenheimer against their respective authorities. This text is narrative and descriptive, but contains chapters which attempt to draw the conflicts together, pointing out similarities and differences.
