Little known outside of Hungary, Vilmos Nagybaczoni Nagy (30 May 1884-21 June 1976) was the first Hungarian to be named "Righteous Among The Nations" by Yad Vashem. In September 1942, the Hungarian Regent, Miklos Horthy, asked General Nagy to return from retirement and accept the portfolio of Minister of Defense. In this position Nagy attempted to keep the military out of politics, rein in the pro-Nazi faction of the Army, and struggled to modernize and preserve the military in order to prevent a repeat of the tragedy that befell it during World War I.
