The authors "transcribed and compiled these polling lists to enable any one to quickly find out if an ancestor was a resident freeholder in Northumberland County, Virginia. The period covered is from 1750 to 1774. The voters listed in this transcription do not represent a complete census for the county, because some residents were not, by definition a freeholder. A freeholder is defined by the 1736 Virginia voting Law; to be any white male 21 years of age, who owns at least 100 acres of unimproved land or 25 acres with a house and plantation."
