The family here studied is the Goode family of Virginia, introduced to America prior to 1660 by the immigrant John Goode. John was born in the vicinity of Cornwall, England, between 1620 and 1630. Whitby refers to the plantation that John established in Virginia, a corruption of the spelling of his English birthplace, Whitley.
