The British School at Athens admitted its first student in 1886. The subsequent thirty years saw a shift towards scientific and professional archaeology. The School developed a number of major projects: the Cyprus Exploration Fund; Megalopolis; Phylakopi on Melos; Laconia (and Sparta); Crete (Praisos, Palaikastro). Its members were also involved in the epigraphic surveys of the Asia Minor Exploration Fund.
