With its search for purity, honesty, modesty, and "fitness of purpose," the late nineteenth and early twentieth century concept of architectural regionalism is seminal to the modern movement. In later historiography, however, regionalism in Europe was neglected and even labeled "backward." The origins of this drastic change of perception can be traced to the 1930s, when regionalism as a positive form gradually turned into a "closed" form of regionalism, a folding back on one's own region as a defense mechanism in an economically and politically turbulent decade.

Physical safety is a core task of government. It is neither surprising nor unreasonable for government to be held accountable for hazardous substances, for food safety, for flood protection, for the spread of infectious diseases, or for the risks involved in new technologies. In 2011 the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations asked the Scientific Council for Government Policy (wrr) to investigate the scope for the development of a generic risk policy in relation to physical safety. Do citizens and businesses take sufficient responsibility for physical safety? Could the...

As China becomes increasingly modern and urban, artists have responded by imagining the Chinese city at the intersections of the social, material, and political realities of modern life. This volume explores how the city-as-spectacle has been visualized and contested in art and popular culture. Featuring essays by an interdisciplinary team of scholars, "Spectacle and the City" is as broad as the terrain it covers: with essays by an interdisciplinary team of experts on Chinese cities, as well as leading cultural critics, it goes beyond mainland China to include cities with cultural...

The Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal promised to create an integrated waterway system across Europe, linking Black Sea ports to Atlantic markets and giving landlocked Czech nation its own connections to the ocean. Few historians are as qualified as C.P. Stacey to address the questions underlying Canada and the Age of Conflict. This volume begins his authoritative and magisterial general history of Canada's relations with the outside world.
The basic theme of the work is that foreign policy, like charity, begins at home. To this end Professor Stacey emphasizes how changing social, economic, and political conditions within Canada have dictated her reactions to external problems.
Volume I begins at Confederation in 1867. It describes how an isolated self-governing colony whose...
