The aim of this thesis is to analyse the work 'November Steps for Biwa, Shakuhachi and Orchestra' composed by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1887-1952). Various approaches have already been taken by musicologists to analyse the harmony, keys and structure of Takemitsu's works. In this master's thesis, however, I will focus specifically on the extent to which his Japanese nationality played a role in the composition of the piece. I will also examine in more detail the ideas that Takemitsu wanted to express in this work.

L'objectif de ce travail est d'analyser l'oeuvre « November Steps pour biwa, shakuhachi et orchestre » composée par le compositeur japonais Toru Takemitsu (1887 - 1952). Il existe déjà diverses approches de musicologues pour analyser l'harmonie, les tonalités et la structure des oeuvres de Takemitsu. Dans ce mémoire, je vais toutefois m'intéresser plus particulièrement à la manière dont sa nationalité japonaise a influencé la composition de cette pièce. Je vais également examiner de plus près les idées que Takemitsu a voulu exprimer dans cette oeuvre.
