Novel architectural details that subtly modify the classic canon of forms governing the orders of columns are an integral component of Francesco Borromini's (1599-1667) oeuvre. He deployed them strategically in order to imbue his unconventional architecture with unexpected qualities in this respect, too, both in formal aesthetic terms and in terms of content and iconology.
