"Dark Quest" strives to be realistic, utilizing insights and truth from all sources that may throw light on man's eternal quest. It assumes that all truth is God's truth whatever its origin and no matter what human presents it. All truth is religious when fully and wisely used by men to move closer to one humanity in one world living in last and highest loyalty to the one real God of all space, time, and eternity as we know them today and as we shall know them more fully tomorrow, if for us on earth there are any tomorrows.

The aim of this book is the discussion of the social environment of the spirituals, and to describe the conditions out of which the spirituals were born. It does not propose to give a complete account of slave life, rather the slave's religion as presented in the spirituals as born.
