This text discusses action amongst users/survivors of mental health services, and initiatives from within the mental health system to involve users. Drawing on international research and writings of activists, the authors explore how gender and ethnicity affect experiences of distress and responses to this. They consider evidence of the effectiveness of collective action amongst service users, and the place of user/survivor movements within the broader social change strategies of new social movements.
