FGM is practiced in at least 26 of the 53 African countries. Prevalence varies from 61% in Somalia and 97% in Egypt to 5% in Uganda. According to UNICEF, Somalia has the highest cases of FGM/C in the world, with girls undergoing it between the ages of 5 and 11; but COVID-19 prevention measures are seemingly perpetuating the continuation of the practice.
