The purpose of this academic publication is to offer a balance of the emergence and integration of the Caribbean island states as members of the Caribbean Community, known by its acronym CARICOM. For more than half a century, this community has worked for the union of the countries of the insular Caribbean, although it includes three countries of the continent: Belize, Guyana and Suriname. We will also explain the integration process leading up to CARICOM and the structure of this Community.

Ziel dieser wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichung ist es, eine Bestandsaufnahme der Entstehung und Integration der karibischen Inselstaaten als Mitglieder der Karibischen Gemeinschaft (CARICOM) vorzunehmen. Seit mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert setzt sich die CARICOM für den Zusammenschluss der Inselstaaten der Karibik ein, auch wenn ihr drei Länder des Kontinents angehören: Belize, Guyana und Surinam. Wir werden auch den Integrationsprozess, der zu CARICOM geführt hat, und die Struktur dieser Gemeinschaft erläutern.

L'objectif de cette publication académique est de faire le point sur l'émergence et l'intégration des États insulaires des Caraïbes en tant que membres de la Communauté des Caraïbes, connue sous l'acronyme CARICOM. Depuis plus d'un demi-siècle, la CARICOM oeuvre pour l'union des pays de la Caraïbe insulaire, bien qu'elle comprenne trois pays du continent : Belize, Guyana et Suriname.
