This book argues, from multiple perspectives, a philosophy of embodiment that resolves the problem of the Vernunft (reason), through a non-exclusivist, embodied account of being human (of doing numbers, doing ethics, doing logic, doing language, doing knowledge). Our perspective is informed by strands of western philosophy, cognitive science, psychology, movement studies, eastern philosophy (Chinese philosophy), and African philosophy. The uniqueness of this project lies in the way it combines studies in various disciplines to give an embodied account of being human that is faithful to the...

Developments in the sciences of cognition seem to threaten traditional philosophical conceptions of cognition, defying all conventional norms, and seeming to ridicule all philosophical characterization of rationality and of logical norms and decision theory criteria. Philosophical claims about the logic of the mind and its conceptual structure are increasingly becoming indefensible. Theories on concepts and categorization as being defined by necessary and sufficient conditions are progressively turning out to be hard to defend. Significant instability in the way we structure concepts and the...

Proponents of embodied reason have justifiable reasons to propose we reexamine the motifs upon which the whole structure of our logic and reason are predicated, given the pervasiveness of metaphorical and analogical reasoning, and the use of mental spaces and practical inferences to link ideas in our logical and rational processes. Studies in cognitive science provide three crucial empirical findings about the nature of the human mind. First is the inherently embodied nature of the mind. Second is the predominantly unconscious nature of human thought. Third is the principally metaphorical...
