This book had its origin in a daily journal I kept when accompanying my late husband, Professor Stuart Simmonds, at that time a Lecturer in Tai Languages, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, on a field trip in Continental South-East Asia in the middle 1950s. The part of the world we visited then has changed enormously during the past half century and has been riven by wars, upheavals and political chicanery.
