Birds of Paradise Island, off the NE windward side of Tobago, derives its name from the Birds ofParadise brought from New Guinea in the early 1900's by Sir William Ingram. His heirs donatedthe island as a perpetual bird sanctuary, and it now hosts some 45 species of exotic birds. TheBirds of Paradise did not survive a hurricane in 1963. However, they continue to thrive in nativeNew Guinea.
