The essay considers the changing axis of British sculpture from the 1960s, both in the formulation of individual works, and the gradual shift in emphasis of sculptural discourse. For its purpose it makes a focus on the activity of two leading artists of their generations Anthony Caro and Alison Wilding; both of international standing, and influential magnets of influence for succeeding artists. The piece also considers their relationship to their immediate contemporaries, and touches on the diverse forces at play in shaping the art and culture of our time.

First published as Journal of The Gallery London in 1993 with revised editions in 1998 and 2001, over four hundred entries chronicle the life of the city; a powerfully driven arena of dysfunctional experience. Episodes record incidents and encounters; in the streets, of shoppers and travellers, and in scenes of social and internal life. As the journal develops, fact and fiction blend into a filmic sequence of events. Reality is coloured by a seamless flow of messages of promise and dereliction, gently gathering strands of the communal imagination into a protective shell.
