The engagement of life in all its surprises, the faces and actions of people, the impressions given by nature, the way these stir the heart and entice the mind into a resonant speaking of the occasion become incidents of poetry in the poets mind. At least I find it that way. These are collected-some are selected, brought together in this book. Once they are here, they are invited to play poet with the minds and hearts of readers, even of this reader, on revisiting them in the course of time. At times, they have been called painterly in their raising an image to the readers eyes, an image that...

In an endeavor to find a fresh way into the scriptural text upon which I would be preaching, I began to develop an imaginary world populated primarily by wee folk. I found the characters I developed and the way that they evolved in my mind and on the page served me well as a consideration of how I sensed things happening in the scriptural text at hand. I want to make these stories and the world they represent newly accessible, and so I bring them to book form fifty at a time. The cover drawing was done by Anne Sullivan, the authors daughter. This is the artists conception of the root steps at...

I was most interested in finding what the author or compiler or editor, as the case may be, sought to convey. I have found the studies of value to me personally and professionally and felt that they were generally well received as I led them. Revisiting...

In the years of my ministry, as I was testing out ways to express my thoughts, I tried writing hymn texts. After a while, having fallen into a scheme I called Cantica Sacra, I found that the hymn texts I created were useful. On occasion, I would import them into worship, a text pertinent to what was being read as the scriptural basis of the day set to a familiar hymn tune; that made the transfer easy for the congregation. But they also served me well as a first reflection in one genre on the scripture from which I would be preaching a few weeks later. This book picks up that developing...
