Several Member States of the European Union have concluded treaties and conventions with Third States dealing with questions of succession law in cross-border matters. Some of these treaties originate from the beginning of the 20th century and are outdated. An ever-growing number of gamblers who chanced their luck online before German gaming law was further liberalised in 2021 have been bringing their cases to German civil courts and attempting to reclaim stakes paid to internet gambling companies.
