A pioneering Australian reference work, this dictionary was published in 1879 by John Henniker Heaton (1848 1914), who in his youth spent twenty years as a journalist in Australia before returning to England and campaigning in Parliament for postal reform. Published amid a bitter dispute with the government printer, it is still acknowledged to contain much useful information despite some inaccuracies.
