Early Eastern Christianity contains six lectures on the Syriac-speaking church, delivered in 1904 by F. C. Burkitt, then lecturer in paleography at the University of Cambridge. The lectures are an attempt to sketch the leading characteristics of the ancient Church of Edessa and the Euphrates Valley from the earliest times to the Council of Chalcedon. This book is an attempt to determine what text of the Gospels was used in the genuine works of S. Ephraim, and to investigate the bearing of his quotations upon the date of the Peshitta. He himself died about 373 AD, so that any version of the Bible used by him must be at least as old as the fourth century.

This volume consists of two lectures delivered by the author at Trinity College, Dublin. The first is on Aphrahat, the Persian sage, and the second on Bardaisan and the Acts of Judas Thomas. (Christian Religion)
