Die Studie befasst sich mit dem Kunstlerdrama, einem Genre, das von der literatur- und theaterwissenschaftlichen Forschung ungeachtet seiner Popularitat bislang kaum untersucht worden ist. Zum einen werden exemplarische Theatertexte von Gerhart Hauptmann, Bertolt Brecht, Wolfgang Bauer, Thomas Bernhard, Falk Richter u.a. textbezogen und aus feldtheoretischer Perspektive analysiert. Zum anderen bietet die Arbeit einen historischen Uberblick uber die Genese der Gattung und die zentralen Motive des Kunstlerdramas im 20. Jahrhundert.
