In comparisonwith the wave of research dedicated to the aesthetics of the Latin Middle Ages, Byzantine aesthetics must be considered a relatively new and still largely unexplored subject. In der reichhaltigen Wirkungsgeschichte der Schriften des Dionysius Areopagita (um 500 n.Chr.) ist die Schrift Uber die kirchliche Hierarchie die einzige, die bisher philosophisch kaum Beachtung gefunden hat.
