Vznikla v roce 1885 jako studentská recese na gymnáziu v Rennes, utahující si z učitele fyziky Hébérta (vyslovovaného ébé, odtud ubu). V roce 1888 studenti uvedli ve svém loutkovém divadle frašku Poláci. Jarry hru později výrazně přepracoval a v roce 1896 proběhla skandální premiéra v divadle Théâtre de l´Ouvre v Paříži.
