Carver (1939–1988) proslul především jako autor povídek, s nimiž se už český čtenář měl možnost seznámit. Sám Carver si však více než povídek cenil své básnické tvorby, které se průběžně věnoval po celou svou spisovatelskou kariéru. Takto by se v roce 1981 jmenovala a takto by vypadala druhá velká Carverova sbírka, kdyby ji redaktor Gordon Lish autorovi neseškrtal, nepřepsal a nepřejmenoval na O čem mluvíme, když mluvíme o lásce. Zachovala se korespondence obou pánu, ze které vyplývá, že se Carver velmi snažil své dílo uhájit, ale nebylo mu to nic platné: Lish mu z některých povídek vyhodil čtyři pětiny textu. Carver (1938-1988) ještě za svého života některé původní verze vydal, ale v úplnosti nyní přepsané povídky vycházejí poprvé.
