Spring is a celebrated event across northern Michigan, especially after a seasonally harsh winter. It is a period when the snow slowly melts away, maple trees are tapped for syrup, trout season opens and turkey hunting begins. It is during this time when an almost sacred tradition of hunting for morel mushrooms begins. A morel is an edible mushroom that is commonly found growing in northern Michigan. After a long cold winter, which is common across northern Michigan, spring is a welcome time of year. Spring is a transition period, from months of snowblowing the driveway and blinding lake effect snow off Lake Michigan, to warmer days and melting snow.
