Mankind is speeding with growing alarm towards some kind of cataclysmic end unless the species made a concerted effort to slow down. The question, though, was how to impose a slowdown when there were so many powers like economists, scientists and politicians, pressing for more growth, more spending, more consumption, more production, more everything. Somebody was going to have to slow this all down and say: "Not more, but less. Not excess, but sufficiency." The Green Movement and various forms of environmentalism have tried to convince the world to change its priorities--but they have failed....
