I grew up in Guyana and unlike many, was lucky. I was certainly stubborn but also fortunate. The 'Third world' as it was known, had so many young people faced with a lifetime of struggle and poverty.
They did almost anything, legal or illegal just to survive. I am an African Caribbean and moved to the UK late 1950's. I saw at first hand the problems that many of my compatriots were experiencing as they tried to find work and a place to live in a land that was far from welcoming.
