Dans ce roman, Alexandre Dumas reecrit a sa facon quelques annees de l'existence de l'ecrivain Restif de la Bretonne et de sa fille Agnes (Ingenue) en s'inspirant directement de l'imaginaire de Restif, a travers un de ces romans Ingenue Saxoncourt que ce dernier publia en 1788. Dumas apporte neanmoins aux personnages de Restif et Ingenue une dimension supplementaire et les lance dans d'inattendues peripeties. He died in 1870 and was buried in his birthplace of Villers-Cotterêts. In 2002, the bicentennial of his birth, he was reinterred in the mausoleum of the Panthéon in Paris.
