In 1846 several families chose to cross the vast expanse of the then United States to the California Territory. They began with high hopes but as the crossing became more rugged, they were exposed to heat, freezing cold, starvation, betrayal and worse. The children showed great courage, fortitude, and an unfailing spirit for survival.
