Josephine Cogdell was born on June 23, 1897, in Granbury, Texas. She was intelligent, somewhat of a tomboy, and over indulged because she was the youngest and a "late-in-life child." As an adult, Josephine was a very complex woman, sometimes described as domineering, but also as loving and giving. This book describes Josephine's transformation from a privileged white teenager with all the misconceptions and prejudices of "Jim Crow" Texas to one-half of the Harlem Renaissance's best known interracial couple.
