The story chronicles the travails of Jacob. Duped into marrying a woman he detests whilst at war with his brother, whom he betrayed, Jacob eventually escapes into the desert pursued by his enemies. He allows his daughter to spy for him while they are beset by terrible danger, and the awful events that befall her threaten the destruction of his entire family.
