Paul Smith travels to Europe to comfort a friend who has had someone dear to them pass away, but soon he finds their behavior impacting his own. Paul is introduced into his friend's circle of socialites and begins to acquire a taste for alcohol, gambling, and womanizing. He also falls in love with a poverty-stricken waitress who is tasked with looking after her sickly grandmother while he deals with the funeral, a troublesome ex-lover, and his own existential crisis.
