Inspired by Canto V of the "Inferno" of Dantes "Divine Comedy", Tchaikovsky initially planned to create an opera on the subject but abandoned the idea in favor the present 25-minute fantasia for orchestra in 1876, fininshing the score on November 17th of that year. Bearing all the hallmarks of the composers late romantic style, Francesca da Rimini takes full advantage of the powerful orchestral forces employed. The first performance was given on March 9, 1877 in Moscow, with the RMS Orchestra conducted by Nikolay Rubinstein. This is a newly engraved and reserached edition prepared by...

First composed in 1869, Tchaikovskys popular overture-fantasia was premiered in Moscow on March 16, 1870 with the Russian Musical Society under the baton of Nikolay Rubinstein. The composer expanded the work later that year, which was the first version published (1871, Berlin) and this second version was given in St. Petersburg at that citys branch of the RMS under Eduard Napravnik. Still not quite satisfied, Tchaikovsky revised the work again in 1880, the German publisher issuing the final version the following year. This is the standard version known and heard in concerts worldwide today....

Wieniawki's second concerto might have been started as early as 1856, but the work was not finished until shortly before its premiere, given in St. Petersburg on November 27, 1862 with the composer as soloist and the orchestra conducted by Anton Rubinstein. Dedicated to Wienawski's fellow violin virtuoso Pablo Sarasate, the work had to wait another 17 years (1879) before it was finally published. The affordable study score offered here is a reduced-format reproduction of the freshly engraved and researched edition prepared by Howard K. Wolf which was first issued by E.F. Kalmus in 2003 in...

Strauss' "MorgenblAtter" is an interesting example of a a work composed as a kind of 'response' to that of another composer. Jacques Offenbach, a French composer whose work served as competition for Strauss' own in Vienna, was commissioned to provide a new waltz by the Vienna Authors' and Journalists' Association to be performed at the January 12, 1864 'Concordia Ball'. This work was promptly nicknamed "AbendblAtter" by the journalists and Stauss, whose orchestra was performing the concert was likewise asked for a new work for the event. Strauss cleverly left the title of the new work to the...

Verdi's operas are most often represented in the concert hall today by their overtures or 'sinfonias' with very good reason. A number of them are symphonic gems in their own right. The operas he composed for the Paris stage give us another view of his orchestral virtuosity with their sumptuous ballet scores. The Ballet de la Reine (La Peregrina) was given its premiere with the world premiere of the opera Don Carlos itself in Paris by the ThEAtre ImpErial de l'OpEra in the Salle Le Peletier in March 11, 1867 under the baton of FranCois George-Hainl. The ballet, which was...
