Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection characterized by persistent inflammation, connective tissue breakdown and alveolar bone destruction. Clinical parameters and indices and radiographic assessment of alveolar bone loss provide information on the severity of periodontitis but they do not measure disease activity.
