Julia Susan Wheelock attended Kalamazoo College, majoring in Latin and higher Math. She went South to help care for a wounded brother. She remained and endeavored to care for other wounded soldiers for nearly three years. This was during a period when it was thought that a lady could not be associated with the army without losing her standard of moral excellence, but during her hospital and army experience, she was uniformly treated with the utmost courtesy and respect.
