Charles Butler (1750-1832) was an English Roman Catholic lawyer and writer. Butler wrote on numerous subjects but his most popular works are biographies on historic figures. One of them was Hugo Grotius, a Dutch jurist who was instrumental in laying out principles of natural law and international law. The 17th century statesman was also an important writer, philosopher and Christian theologian in an era where the Netherlands was still a global power.
